Hot Chocolate Cappuccino-style

It seems a bit silly to give a recipe for this, as it's so simple. I have my own way of making hot chocolate: I love to make it "cappuccino" style! One gets to sip it through the milk foam and then to eat the slightly chocolatey foam with a spoon. It's a very easy way of bringing your hot chocolate to the next level: no need for cream or real chocolate. You'll need only milk and cocoa powder, which you probably already have in your pantry. I'm using skimmed milk here, as it's easier to whip into stable foam. If you've got an espresso machine with a steam wand or other proper gear for frothing milk, use that for convenience. I'm quite content using my Bamix and its whipping blade, but I find it works properly only on skimmed milk. If you'd like to try some plant-based milks, I've made a test comparing different brands. I find that most of the plant-based milks suit very well to hot chocolate.

It's time for winter holiday (also called skiing holiday) here in southern Finland. Children have a week off from school and usually also parents take some holiday, if possible. If you've got opportunity to go for a little skiing or hiking trip, take some hot chocolate in a thermos flask with you and enjoy it outdoors. It will taste so good! The foam doesn't really last long, so in that case maybe a normal hot chocolate will do. Happy winter holiday!

Cappuccino-style hot chocolate is like a strong cocoa drink with milk froth. First you make a strong cocoa base, which you then top up with milk froth.

Ingredients:
  • 1-2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 2-3 Tbsp boiling water
  • 200 ml milk
  • sugar, according to taste
Instructions:

  1. First, warm up your mug/cup.
  2. Add the cocoa powder and boiling water and stir until an even paste. (Add some sugar at this stage if you want.)
  3. Make the milk froth (if you have an espresso machine, you can of course use it. I don't, so I use my Bamix immersion blender with its whisking blade by pouring the milk to a small pot and meanwhile it's on high heat, I blend it until it's foamy and hot.)
  4. Pour the milk + froth on the cocoa paste, sweeten according to taste and enjoy!

*Calories are counted using skimmed milk and 2 tsp cocoa powder, without sugar.

Kaakao-cappuccino on oikeastaan kuin kaakao maitovaahdolla. Ensin valmistetaan vahva kaakao (ikään kuin espresso), joka sitten kruunataan vaahdotetulla maidolla.

Ainekset:
  • 1-2 tl tummaa kaakaojauhetta (Fazerin Ögon-kaakao on mun lemppari)
  • 2-3 rkl kuumaa vettä
  • 2 dl maitoa
  • sokeria maun mukaan
Valmistusohjeet:

  1. Esilämmitä kuppi esim. kuumalla vedellä tai mikrossa.
